The Waterfall In Puerto Rico I Bet You Haven’t Seen: Gozalandia Waterfall

Arriving at the easy to miss entrance -at the side of the rural road-, we cross the gate and head down the steep road.

A local young man ask us for $5 to park at the grass parking lot. We were lucky to carry cash, because he didn’t accept credit cards. With our towels and daypack ready, we look for the trail that will take us to the beautiful Gozalandia waterfall.

The lack of signs and markings, made the trail a little bit confusing to find at the beginning. People returning from the falls showed us the way. “It’s way more beautiful in person, it’s really awesome,” says one lady. With those words in mind I was desperate to get to the waterfalls, the slippery and muddy trail adds some excitement to the adventure.

The rumbling and laughter crossing the lush tropical vegetation starts to gets louder. After a few minutes hiking down the trail and some slips, we finally made it to falls. The scene was so epic that I felt like in a magical tropical forest. The Gozalandia waterfall appears in the middle of the Puerto Rican Jungle, like a smooth white veil that caresses the flawless rocks. Located in the municipality of San Sebastian Puerto Rico, the falls happens along the Guatemala River.

Gozalandia waterfall was the set of the film “The Perfect Getaway”, once you visit them you’ll understand why they choose this magnificent location. A little bit to crowded for my taste, the loud music and the locals with their pitbulls, wasn’t the picture I had in mind. Even though, the beauty of the waterfalls let out my inner child, rushing into the refreshing sapphire looking waters.

After watching the locals, I climbed a rock 20 feet above the water and dived in to the natural swimming pool, the adrenaline rush was inevitable. A secret grotto lies underneath the enchanting waters, the perfect place for a romantic kiss or to whisper a secret to your loved one.

Rejuvenated, I lie down in the rocks and enjoy the peace of nature. Following the trail along the river we found a smaller fall, not so popular. A rope tightened to a tree is the ultimate fun ride to swing trough the air and dive into the water. Gozalandia is definitely a natural jewel that will make you wish to stay there forever.

To get there: take Route 111 in San Sebastian, turn north onto Route 446. Wait until  a large bridge on the right and then turn right. Go across the bridge and drive up the road about 0.6 miles. Then you will see a large gate on the left.
